Powerful and scripture-based tips on how to declutter and spiritually cleanse your home
I remember visiting my brother and sister-in-law’s home before my brother’s deployment overseas. My sister-in-law set up the guest bedroom to make us feel cozy as she always does. Walking into the bedroom, I felt a flutter in my Spirit.
God’s peace and presence were so palpable in the room. I felt safe and right at home. When I mentioned it to her, she told me that she had been praying over the guest room before we arrived.
I also remember walking into our apartment shortly after my husband and I were married. Something felt off.
Something was there that shouldn’t have been. I knew my husband loved horror movies. So after walking around a bit, I asked “Did you watch a scary movie?”
When he replied yes, I had my answer.
There is the physical world that we’re able to see, touch, and feel. But, we cannot forget that there is an unseen spiritual world that is alive and well. The two are interwoven and what happens in one affects the other.
Physically, when guests are coming over, we may rush to clean some unsightly places in our homes to make sure they’re at their best. But, how would Jesus find our homes spiritually if He were coming over as a guest?
In this article, I will share with you what Jesus is teaching me about giving a home a deep spiritual cleansing. When you have a spiritually clean home where the very presence of God dwells, you set yourself, your family, and your community up for spiritual success.
This is the enemy’s eviction notice.
Why It’s Important To Cleanse Your Home Spiritually
When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.
Matthew 12:43-45
If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.
Psalm 91:9-10
Would you allow a stranger in your home? Would you allow them to set up shop and influence your household? My guess is you wouldn’t.
It’s the same concept when the enemy gets the keys to our home and starts his mission of stealing our joy, killing our dreams, and destroying our callings.
And he doesn’t even need keys per se. As Christians, we have a target on our backs. The enemy dreams that we never experience God and suffer with him in his coming fate.
The Bible gives us a very vivid image when it states that Satan is like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. All he needs is a crack in the foundation and that’s his entryway to slither in and wreak havoc on your life.
Above, I referenced Matthew 12:43-45. In this scripture, Jesus teaches us an important lesson about sin and the tactics of the enemy while speaking to those who had rejected Him as the Messiah.
Jesus warns us that we must not only cast out and rebuke the devil from our homes (our hearts and our spaces), but we must also replace that occupancy with the Holy Spirit.
He goes further in His warning stating what happens if we don’t. The unclean spirit will come back with friends. When the presence of Jesus isn’t detected, it occupies the home again bringing roommates more evil than itself. This leaves the homeowner worse off than before.
On the other hand, Psalms 91:9-10 shows us what happens when the Holy Spirit is invited in and has authority. Remember, God is a gentleman, He won’t push himself on you.
And this isn’t to say that “life” won’t happen in this fallen world that we live in. But, you can rest assured that the Spirit of the Almighty God is with you.
How to know when your house needs to be spiritually cleansed?
My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest
Isaiah 32:18
You may be wondering how often you need to spiritually clean your home. It’s very similar to when we need to clean it physically. However, it’s crucial not to procrastinate in giving your house a spiritual cleaning like we may do with our homes physically.
If you do, there will be spiritual consequences and you don’t need those problems. Just like dirty laundry, if you leave it there, it will continue to pile on.
Thus, you must always be aware of your home’s spiritual condition. Just like we do physically when we sense and “see” disorganization or dirtiness (sin), we need to clean. For spiritual purposes…this should happen immediately.
You don’t want to risk letting evil and sin grow comfortable in your home. Make the enemy very uncomfortable and hesitant about approaching your street—even your neighborhood.
How to cleanse your house spiritually
Okay, so we’ve discussed the importance of spiritually cleansing your home. Now let’s discuss how to do so.
Spiritually cleansing your home is all about inviting in the presence of God as He is the one who will be doing the heavy lifting. Here’s how.
Allow God to be head of your household
For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything.
Hebrews 3:4
Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.
Psalms 127:1
As we referenced above in Matthew 12:43-45 when evil tries to approach your doorstep, make sure it’s God who answers the door and stands out in the yard to greet them.
Dedicate your home to God
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.
Ezekiel 36:25
But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua 24:15
When we think about spiritually cleansing our homes, prayer and the anointing (dedication) of the house are usually what come to mind. And it’s for good reason.
When we anoint our homes with oil, we physically mar our spaces with God’s spiritual presence making it sacred. It’s us saying spiritually “Here is holy.”
All of us work so hard to secure our homes. It’s a blessing to give it back to God and allow it to operate under his authority. Any home that does this prospers because that’s who God is and it’s what He does.
Now I will warn you. Dark times may come to your doorstep as God allows them. Jesus never promised that every day would be easy, but He did promise never to forsake you.
He will only allow what’s necessary for your teaching and growth. So don’t think He has abandoned you when you hit a rough patch.
Pray and serve Him all the more because He will work everything for your good.
Pray over your home
if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14
Prayer is one of our most powerful weapons in spiritual warfare. Jesus himself would often escape to a quiet place to pray. He did this because he sought guidance, wisdom, and strength for battle.
He did this as an example for us to follow as we walk our Christian journeys. When we pray, invite God’s presence, and speak His word of life over our homes, the atmosphere will change as the enemy and his friends can no longer dwell there.
Check out Matthew 8:28-34 to see how demons recognized Jesus and His authority.
Spiritually clean your home with God’s word
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Deuteronomy 6:6-9
Like prayer, the word of God is another powerful weapon that you have at your disposal. It’s also a weapon that Jesus used in spiritual warfare when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness.
Fill your home with the word of God. Boldly speak His words of life over your house and everyone in it. Teach the word of God to everyone in your home.
God states that where 2 or three are gathered in His name, there He will be (Matthew 18:20).
Cleanse your home spiritually by inviting in the righteousness of God
The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
Proverbs 3:33
Righteousness is like a security system that arms your home against the enemy and his friends. When you create an atmosphere where the righteousness of Christ dwells, Satan will not dare approach your doorstep so boldly.
Fill your home with God’s presence with worship
Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
Colossians 3:16
When we worship, we fill the environment with God’s glorious, powerful, and mighty presence. I harp on God’s presence throughout this article because of how powerful and glorious it is. I have no words to describe it.
It’s peace, joy, safety, and it’s magnificent. All things that should fill your homes as opposed to darkness, depression, and anxiety.
Include God in every aspect of your home.
When I started to think about the decor of our home, I wanted it to resonate with our Christian faith. Because if the rocks can cry out in silence, so will my home.
I replaced coffee table books with aesthetic Bibles. I have Christian candles that I will use during my quiet time with God, my self-care days, and as part of my decor. I also went on Etsy and found some cool Christian art from talented artists that I can print and frame.
Some people even have prayer gardens in their backyards if that’s your thing. Ask God for creativity in filling your home with Him. I promise He will deliver.
Guard your heart and mind
I will be careful to lead a blameless life—when will you come to me? I will conduct the affairs of my house with a blameless heart.
Psalms 101:2
This is an important warning for every Christian trying to keep a spiritually clean home. Be sure you’re not inadvertently inviting the enemy in. Be careful what you’re watching in your home, what you’re listening to, and whom you let into your home. The spirit of discernment will help you determine what’s right and what’s wrong.
Just listen to it.
Spiritually cleanse your house with forgiveness
Unforgiveness can sometimes live in our hearts and stifle our spiritual growth. It puts up a wall between us and God and can block blessings. It’s a prison that Satan builds for his prisoner.
This is why Jesus teaches us to pray “Forgive us of our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” If God can forgive us of our sins, we can ask Him to help us to forgive others who have hurt or offended us.
So if there are any family bickerings, forgive and allow God’s peace to infiltrate your home and your heart.
Prayer to spiritually cleanse your house
Dear Heavenly Father,
You are the creator of everything in heaven and on Earth. Everything falls under your authority.
This includes the home you have provided for me and everything in it. I ask now that you fill every crack and crevice of this space with your presence.
Protect this house…this community from things seen and unseen. If there is anything here that is not like you, I command it to leave in Jesus’s holy and mighty name.
I invite your love and peace into this space today and every day. Make yourself at home.
In Jesus’s name,
Amen
Final thoughts on how to spiritually cleanse your home
As we physically maintain our homes with regular cleanings and outdoor maintenance, we must also do this spiritually. A well-kept, spiritually clean home is one that hell cannot threaten.
Remember it’s all about God’s presence. He’s the only tool and cleanser that you will need. Happy cleaning.
Until next time,
-Dr Jay.
