best bible verses about Christmas

This post will provide the reader with life-giving Bible verses about Christmas that will inspire and soothe the soul.

The Christmas holidays can be a magical time of the year. It can also be a stressful one.

On one hand, there are nostalgic Christmas movies, carols, steaming cups of hot chocolate, and sacred time with family. On the other hand, there are work deadlines, financial worries, busy travel itineraries, and difficult family dynamics to navigate.

As a physician working in the hospital during the holiday season, I see both sides.  I see the gift of song being shared as volunteers play live music, filling the hallways with Christmas cheer.  But, sickness and disease is cruel and do not care what time of year it is.

This means that I have to help patients and families navigate some of the most difficult times of their lives.  Giving patients and families news that will forever alter their realities is one of the hardest parts of my job.  Also hard is sending someone to the intensive care unit knowing that they will spend this Christmas on machines, but fighting so that they will see the next one.

I know. That’s heavy.

Sometimes, I do wish I could go back to my childhood when life seemed so much simpler. The days when I breathed in the crisp Lowcountry air and cuddled with blankets with Home Alone on repeat, laughing with my siblings.

But, the Lord wants you and me to know this truth.

No matter what you’re facing this holiday season, He is with you. God wants you to experience the joy that only He can provide.  It’s the joy that remains steadfast and ever present whether you’re on a mountain top or the valley low.  A joy immune to the world’s chaos.

So, in this article, we will discuss bible verses about Christmas along with real-world applications to ensure that you enjoy each day of your holiday season and beyond.

Bible Scriptures about Christmas and what God wants you to learn from them.

Bible scriptures about Christmas

The true meaning of Christmas is all about the gift that God gave to a fallen world—salvation through Jesus Christ.

The Old Testament starts with Genesis and the creation of the heavens, Earth, and every creature that dwells in it. We then learn about the fall leading to the birth of sin, an eternal enemy that would affect generations to come.

When sin entered the scene, its darkness penetrated everything.  It brought sickness and death into a perfect world. The price could not be paid with the blood of animals. It required a life.

Jesus willingly gave His. Because of his sacrifice on the cross, you and I are no longer bound by shame, defeat, sickness, and death. We are no longer separated from God.

Remembering this truth is what Christmas is all about. This is the remedy you need to ensure your holiday season is filled with the joy, laughter, and peace that Jesus’s sacrifice bought for you.

So, as promised, here are the perfect scriptures about Christmas to help you do so.

Bible verses about Christmas: Prophesies and promises of the coming Messiah

Matthew 1:18-25

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.  Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:  “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”](which means “God with us”).

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.  But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Reflection:

May this verse remind you of the obedience and faith of two ordinary individuals who allowed God’s great purpose to be fulfilled through them. God used their obedience to usher in THE gift that changed the fate of mankind.

In what area of your life is God requiring your obedience and faith this holiday season? Who knows what’s on the other side of your “yes.”

[Related article]: The opposite of obedience to God is disobedience.  Learn from the Israelites why you should avoid it at all costs.

Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign:The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

AND

Jeremiah 31:31

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,  “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.”

Reflection: These verses are written evidence of God’s faithfulness. From the beginning of time, He knew that we would Fall. Thus, He orchestrated a plan to restore us to an intimate relationship with Him.

When I reflected on these scriptures, I felt so undeserving. You may feel that way too.

But this is the definition of God’s grace. This is what the Lord wants us to focus on this Holiday season and every day of our lives. No matter how much the enemy tries to convince us of how unworthy we are,  we are called to stand on God’s truth.

In what areas of your life are you expecting God to show up faithfully? Don’t be discouraged if it seems delayed.  God always has perfect timing.

John 1:9-10

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

AND

John 1:14

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Reflection: This verse speaks of a time when the world was so lost that it didn’t recognize its promised Savior. The One that had been prophesied about for generations.

Maybe they didn’t recognize him because they expected someone like David.  They expected a bold king leading them into battle and restoring the peace.

However, Jesus came as the exact opposite.

He literally left His throne in heaven and was born a vulnerable child in a manger. He wasn’t decorated in jewels, the finest robes, and He didn’t place a crown on His head. He absolutely could have.

Yet, he came to a fallen world focused on spreading the gospel and establishing a new covenant with God’s people. He did all of this knowing that it would brutally cost Him his life.

Like Jesus, in what area of your life can you humble yourself before God’s throne, allowing His great work to be completed through you?

Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Reflection: As we discussed above, Jesus wasn’t born into this world in riches and luxuries as a typical royal would have been.

Race, status, wealth, and the opinions of people (i.e, the Pharisees) were not on His list of concerns.  What He actually cared about was delivering souls. He cared about us having access to Heaven.

Where is your focus this Holiday season? Is it on the opinions of people or is it on the only opinion that matters—God’s?

Bible verses about Christmas: Celebrating the gift of Jesus Christ

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

AND

John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Reflection: Every sin that you’ve ever committed has been paid for if you seek God through Jesus with a repentant heart.  This is why we celebrate Jesus, the name above all names, on Christmas and every day of our lives.

What are some ways that you will be using Christmas to celebrate Jesus?

Bible verses about Christmas: Biblical principles to apply to your life

Luke 10:38-42

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.

But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,  but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Reflection: This passage of scripture teaches us an important biblical lesson about stress and managing our priorities.  In today’s culture where family, careers, and self-care all seem to compete for our time, remember Mary’s posture.

She set everything aside to sit at the feet of Jesus.  This is not encouraging you to neglect your responsibilities. It’s about recognizing where our help and strength come from—the Lord.

Mary chose to be still in Jesus’s presence and cast her cares unto the Lord.  You can too.

As you juggle your roles in life, know that you have the privilege of seeking God for wisdom, guidance and strength just as Mary and the Proverbs 31 woman did.

So this holiday season, no matter how long your to-do list, present it to God and experience what it’s like to work through his strength and not your own.

Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Reflection: This is another scripture we can focus on this Christmas to serve as a reminder of where our priorities should truly lie.

Our temporary possessions and status here on Earth cannot be taken with us to our eternal home. Yes, God blesses us with these things, but He is more concerned about the posture of the heart.

So, ask yourself.  Are you storing up treasures here on Earth or in Heaven?

James 2:1-4

My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,”  have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

Reflection: When I was younger, I heard some older women talking about the length of a woman’s dress in the church.

Listening to this conversation taught me not to judge or mistreat someone based on their appearance.  Scripture tells us that this is what man does.  However, God looks at the heart.

As children of God, we are called to have the mind of the spirit, not the flesh. A gentle encouragement and kindness for a young woman seeking the Lord would have been the perfect opportunity to show her the heart of Christ.

How will you show others the heart of Christ this Christmas season?
